Adults Only Magic Show ⭐⭐⭐
The Adults Only Magic Show features magicians Sam and Justin, performing a variety of tricks with the help of bunny Richard and Magnus “Danger” Magnus, their charming MC. The show is a blend of noteworthy magic, dick jokes, and unnecessary nudity. Let’s begin with the magic. Many of the tricks were quite impressive. There was this great one where we, the audience, designed an event throughout several parts of the show, and much later it’s revealed that our exact prediction had been written out and locked away under our noses the whole time. I really enjoyed the ones that built on each other when something from the beginning of the show reappeared later on. There were, however, too many tricks that felt gimmicky, with the sole purpose being to enforce the “adults only” theme, which mostly consisted of penis humour and cheap laughs.
From the description and the title, I expected nudity; I didn’t expect it to be so tasteless. It’s the second fringe show I’ve seen where a man runs out towards the audience in a thong sagging from the back due to their mic pack being clipped to it. That’s the whole bit. Much of the nudity felt forced for the sake of showing a penis. I wanted it to be more clever. At one point, the MC runs across the stage, dick swinging, while the magicians are performing a trick. I wish the “adults only” theme were better incorporated into the show. For example, to justify the MC being naked, I would’ve liked it to have been written into the storyline in a situation where the magicians prank him at the beginning of the show and then later on it’s revealed to him that they’ve stolen his undergarments or something. Or maybe a trick where they saw Richard in half, and when he’s whole again, his clothes have disappeared, and he’s left in just tassels or something.
Overall, I wanted more from it. More daring magic, more from the adult themes, more Richard and more women too. I wish the intensity was cranked up. The premise of the show is good and has potential to be great. The guys are charismatic, they’re good at what they do, and there are lots of great elements in the show. However, the story could’ve been tighter, and they could’ve pushed the boundaries further with the “adults-only” theme.
Adults Only Magic Show plays at Studio Three at Assembly George Square Studios until the 30th August at 9:40 pm and runs for approximately 69 minutes.
